| | | Re: Sika Deer hoof prints Are you finding footprints at the bottom of the holes? Do they follow a regular pattern like you'd expect from a set of tracks? If there are no recognisable prints and they're randomly distributed around the wood, then they could be something else.
My first thought on coming across conical holes in the leaf litter is that they are badger 'snuffle holes', made by badgers rooting about and digging out worms and insects.
Do you know if there are any badgers in the area? If there are, they could well be the culprits...

The holes have a very slight ridge at the bottom.
They follow a pattern; two a short space either side and 2 or 3 feet away (walking straight on) is the repeated set although sometimes it can be disrupted such as downhill they are further apart and sometimes look "skidded" downhill as well. I can usually follow the tracks through trees but they dont go far into hedgerows or shrubs. I'm pretty sure there is badgers in the lightmoor area there is certainly some further north where are house is.
