| | | Re: under my shed Well it has been out again today, munching away, and then turning over all the leaves. It does eat food that I put out, but will leave a large amount. If I see it again tonight, there will be some careful attempt at weighing
This could be an interesting night. It will be fine as long as I don’t miss Spooks. |

Make sure there is always food and water available, the chances are there will be more under there, This is where mum as given birth to them and can have 4-5 young and she may have gone now to hibernate. If these are below 600g the chances of survival are not good, they will need to be kept warm and looked after. If you need more info in looking after hoglets visit Rons Hedgehogs | here you will see how I do it. |

| | | Re: under my shed Well the hog never came back after the few visits. Then I was up the other night at about 2am and looked out to see it walking on the lawn. It was good to see it back after so long. It had grown loads and looked well. Sadly today whilst doing a few things in the garden I found it under a bush. It had died but only recently by the looks of it. I am quite gutted about it as I had wanted to catch it but it never came out in the day again. If it had done I would have taken it in like so many people mentioned. I don’t know why it had died out in the open as its home under the shed must still be there. |

Just a reminder to everybody to continue to leave a little dried food and water out during the winter for any hogs which may rouse from hibernation.
Dried foods such as cat bics, peanuts and sunflower hearts will not go off as quickly as fresh cat/dog meat if left untouched for longer periods.
An effective and simple cat-proof and weather-proof hog feeding station is an upturned plastic storage box (or similar), with a small entrance hole cut out (approx 4.5"x4.5") and weighted down with a brick. |

| | | Re: under my shed Once they’re fully independent from mum, they disperse and generally lead solitary lives and will build their own hibernaculum (nest) prior to hibernating. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule… a few years ago I inspected one of my newly home-made hog houses to ensure rain hadn’t leaked in and was rather surprised to find TWO hibernating hogs inside!
That aside, even if you did only have the one hedgehog nesting under your shed, it’s highly likely that you would have had other hogs just visiting your garden in search of food during the course of a night. Hedgehogs will travel distances of 1-2 miles every night in search of food and they most certainly remember where there’s a regular food source
A lot of folk think the hedgehog they see in their garden at different times of the night is the same one, when in reality it's most likely to be different ones ‘doing the rounds’! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
