| | | Really pleased with what I found......... Found this at the weekend and I am really pleased cos I have never found one before. It is an antler off a roe deer, a two year old one, so I am told. Was also told they quite often eat them when they fall off. I am probably going to mount it on a staff of some sort........ |

I've never found an antler - despite my local woods being overrun!! I don't know what the knobbly bits are, perhaps to give the males purchase on each other's antlers? Mind you I don't even know if Roe buck actually spar like other deer....
You have staff??
You really shouldn't go around sticking anters on them willy nilly you know...... |

| | | Re: Really pleased with what I found......... The knobblies are called 'pearls' but I'm not sure what purpose they have. They count for up to four points in the CIC scoring system for antler quality. I would say this is likely to be from an animal at least three years old, though probably not much more. As for eating them, I think it's just a question of recycling scarce nutrients.

I once found one that was covered in small slugs and snails, which appeared to have been eaten right down by them. I would think the extra minerals were much sought after.
I think the 'pearls' are just part of the growth pattern.
You often get double ones on plaques for sale at antique fairs for around a tenner. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
