| | | Myxomatosis The dreaded rabbit disease is back around my way. We have a couple of rabbits living under our garden shed, an escaped tame one that has a wild partner. The tame one has disappeared and the other day I noticed the wild one with swellings on it's face, eyes shut and it was walking into trees, obviously blind. My neighbour informed me that the disease is now rife in the area and most of the rabbits have disappeared

| | | Re: Myxomatosis It's been rife on my patch this year. Since mid July they have suffered badly.
The good news is now it appears to have cleared, at least I have not seen any sign of it for a while. Saying that, I see plenty of rabbits that have got over it but are showing the scars. |

According to info on the web the disease takes around 10 - 14 days to kill the rabbit, if not it has a 50/50 chance of survival.

| | | Re: Myxomatosis Last year I saw many affected rabbits - horrible. This year, however, I don't think I've seen more than a couple. Plenty of healthy looking rabbits around though, so looks like the population as a whole hasn't been too badly affected. |

| | | Re: Myxomatosis It was rife round this part of Essex for a time too,but thankfully it seems to have abated.
Hate to see the poor rabbits suffering when it takes a hold on them, kindest thing to do is put them out of their misery(if you can)

ellen | I phoned the RSPCA and they won't come out unless I catch it for them, easier said than done and as the neighbours have young kids who feed it daily I am just going to let nature decide.

| | | Re: Myxomatosis We've had a few cases around here, and I agree, it's a terrible sight. Thankfully it doesn't seem to be too widespread yet.
Ron - you mentioned a 50/50 chance of survival. Does that mean that myxi is not necessarily fatal? If so, is it right to cull the poor rabbit if it has a chance of pulling through?

| | | Re: Myxomatosis I didn't know that they have a survival rate..But if the eyes are too badly affected then it would be kinder to put them down if they cant see to find food..
Hope your rabbit pulls through especially if children are feeding it.. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
