| | | Red Deer Photography Does anyone know a good site in Norfolk to photograph Red Deer in the rut?
I know this is a bit late in the season, but worth a try. |

I am an even newer member than you so have only just seen your post and noticed it has not been answered.
In preperation for the next rut, Minsmere have a herd of 200 Red Deer and offers you an opportunity. I dont know Minsmere well enough to advise where your best vantage point will be but, on my infrequent visits to Minsmere I have always found Red Deer in the fields between the marshes and the Southern drain boundary. If you take the path by the sluice and follow the drain towards the Popular trees (a walk of about 3km's) you are likley to see at least some Deer. If this where they rut you will have the added protection of the drain if a Stag gets aggresive.
Watching the rut is significant enough to recommend some preperation and you may want to visit the area early and to discuss the opportunities with the Rangers.
Whilst I appreciate a visit to the Cairngorms is a more expensive option there are some really good estates that offer guides to get you close to a Scottish rut. With the backdrop of the mountains the area is fantastic and there is a load more to see.
Good luck

| | | Re: Red Deer Photography Morning! Obviously far too late for any rutting, but for next year this place might be worth a look. Don't know where you are in Norfolk, I'm in Gorleston which is virtually in Suffolk, but anyway.........Took kids for a drive yesterday and we live quite near the Somerleyton Estate. It's pretty vast, with lots of tenant farmers etc and traversed by lots of minor roads. As you drove past one field which had woodland to its rear myt wife remarked that she had just seen some enormous deer! I reversed up and was amazed to see 14 red deer in the field. Could only make out one stag, he took most interest in us and kept an eye on us whilst the others kept on eating but they were all quite calm and easily observed, despite, or perhaps because of, the failing light. Let me know if you're interested and \I'll post you precise directions. It was only about 500m from the A12, so not hard to get too if you're over this way. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
