| | | Yet MORE long-eared bats! Well, after last month's casualties, I thought I'd seen enough long-eared bats to last me a lifetime! But tonight, at about quarter to eight, I went into the garage to get my guinea pigs in from their run outside. I
turned on the light as I brought the first back in, and suddenly a long-eared bat flew in the door. It landed on the inside wall and sat there, turning its head. It looked a lot healthier than the ones I saw last month: they've probably eaten well now after the sunshine.
Then, as I came out again from taking the first piggy home, another bat flew in and went straight into a messy web in a corner over the door. Clever move: probably the bat equivalent of a ready meal! pre-packed dinner caught for you, and a spider side-dish! It flew out of there after a few moments and landed on the wall a few metres from the other bat and did the same looking around routine.
I caught my other guinea pig, and went to turn out the garage light. The first bat flew into the web, but obviously didn't find anything, then went out the garage door. The other stayed in until I switched off the light, and I heard its wings so i knew it had gone.
An amazing experience, seeing them healthy and lively in contrast to the sickly and dead casualties of the wet summer!

| | | Re: Yet MORE long-eared bats! I am green! How amazing, I bet you wish you'd had a camera. I absolutely love bats and was lucky enough to see some a few weeks ago at my local reserve, it was getting dark and I was out with my little lad and we had a few flitting back and forth it was one of those moment when you think life just doesn't get any better than this moment in time. They were sort of ghost like, but the views that you had must have been perfect, what a feel good factor! It always feels like such a privilege to be in the company of bats!

| | | Re: Yet MORE long-eared bats! Yes, I wonder whether they've learned that there are good things in webs. My dad wondered whether by sitting on the wall and looking around they were waiting for insects to come in. They seemed to follow the sound of my nails when I clicked them.

| | | Re: Yet MORE long-eared bats! Yeah, there's some sort of bat living in one of our farm buildings. It may be them, but we also have pippistrelles round here too, so not sure.
