Hedgehog poo or rat?

I found this dropping near some cat food I've been putting out for a half-grown hedgehog. I didn't see the hog last night and it didn't look to me as though the food had been eaten (although it had been rained on so it was difficult to tell). But then I saw this single dropping and I wondered. I'll stress again, this isn't a full-size hog, so that will affect the size of the poo, I think.

I'd be grateful for your thoughts.

It looks Hedgehoggy to me Rats are generally more 1 penny piece sized

Thanks. When I looked at the tracks and signs page just now I thought it looked more hedgehog. I wanted to check, though, as I don't want to be feeding rats!

Ta. By the way, if you're feeding a hog Whiskas cat food, how long can you keep an opened tin in the fridge before you need to chuck it out? I can see me having to get rid of at least half a tin uneaten, which is a bit of a waste.

Several days is OK, a week would be pushing it.

If you waste a lot, pouches might be more economical.

Dry food lasts "forever" and is the cheapest option.

Im not to sure that dry food is great for hedgehogs is it?

Hedgehog droppings are often full of beetle elytra etc, which is a good way of distinguishing them from other droppings. Another dropping that looks like this is the dropping of a toad.

Not sure actually - I wrote that because I thought I read it on this forum recently.

It might be ok, just I wasnt sure, I dont feed hedgehogs so was just interested.

make sure you put down cat or dog food and cat biscuits in a safe place the hogs can get to as they will starve locked in a garden without being fed.

(the reason I remembered this is because dry food seems to make my cat very sick - so "my ears prick up" if it is mentioned)
