single bat seen hunting at dusk over still water about 10-12 inch wingspan any ideas? pics in Gallery bat i.d.

hunting over water with a white stomach i would have said daubentons , but 12" wingspan is much too big for that, so probably one of the "fist sized" bats like noctule or serotine - its hard to tell a lot from the pics

Maybe if you give the location someone can give a "best guess"

Looks good for a noctule to me, Wingspan about rite, Dark face, underside look good too. Look abit pale for a serotine although not to clear a photo.

thanks, really tricky getting pics in poor/no light. wingspan is only an estimate but if it is a metric bat it could be as big as 300mm or as small as 230mm

if it is any help: it seemed to glide more than others that i have seen. cheers eeyore

Just a couple of quick questions...

1). how high was it above the water?
2). how did it fly? round and round, quickly, smoothly, dip down suddenly?
3). could you hear anything?

it was flying mostly at about 3-4m above the water and dipped lower occasionally but at dusk i couldnt see it when it was low flying, glided a bit quite a smooth flight in mainly large circles
