Welcome to WAB!
I have only ever seen Mink on 2 occasions .... one at Stodmarsh in Kent and one at Dinas RSPB reserve in mid Wales. Both were very fleeting views and it sounds like your view was much better!

| | | Re: wild mink I have seen quite a few when fishing. I once watched a family of them round up ducklings on a small reservoir, then one of the young ones appeared from the water at my feet. The look in its eye said it would kill me if I weren't so big.
A few years ago when we were relatively new to our Highland retreat, my wife said she had seen a mink. I said I was doubtful if they had spread so far north, could it be an otter? She said no, because she had also seen one of those. We have seen both many times since. It is a relief that the otters don't seem to be affected by the presence of the mink - but all the same, I wish they could be wiped out. |

As we had a lot of ground nesting birds this could have been disasterous - three of us stood on top of the hides with two shotguns and a rifle and blasted away for nearly an hour, it sounded like anzio all over again. when the "battle" was over the body count was upwards of 200 mink
Not a nice day but it had to be done - I just wish people would think about the consequences before releasing species like that into ecosystems where they don't belong.

My personal opinion is that we need to be pretty ruthless when it comes to mink to safeguard some of our most endangered creatures such as water voles. I don't think we can always rely on the local otter to our dirty work for us.

Ahhh... just found out they're North American.
