| | | I've lost my mum Cute little chap I came across yesterday in the middle of a field.
No sign of mum anywhere.
Lots of Harriers about so I pulled some large weeds and covered him.
Hope he will be alright. |

Looks like a leveret to me.
Leverets are frequently left during the day in their 'forms' which are above ground usually in the open in a field. This is perfectly normal & they should be left alone, but I am sure mum will find him.

| | | Re: I've lost my mum Thats a leveret (young hare) and mum leaves them in depressions (forms) in fields while she nips off to feed etc. Camoflage is excellent and I've read that like deer fawns they don't have a smell, so provided they keep still - which they are very good at - they will usually avoid becoming someones next meal!

| | | Re: I've lost my mum You are all quite right, It is a Leveret (young Hare).
The Hare has her young in a form, but unlike rabbits, they are born complete with their fur and their eyes open. Shortly after giving birth she will move them to seperate forms across the field.
The form is just a shallow depression in the ground usually against a clump of grass or a weeds.
The Hare is mostly a nocturnal animal and will leave the young leverets in their forms during the day then come to feed them on dark.
I found this little chap wandering about in the open which would have made him easy prey for any predator.
There was some farming activity in the field he was in and I think it had disturbed him.
I just hope he stayed still under the weeds that I covered him with. |

Yes, that's a leveret. I had one delivered to me by my very soft-mouthed labrador X about 6 weeks ago. I had no idea where he'd been found so was reluctant to put him back randomly into a field - because we're surrounded by fields. Happily, the leveret has hand-reared nicely and is ready for release. Coincidentally, the dog found him (or her) after a field adjacent to us had been silaged so I'm sure field activity is what gets them moving even at that age.
In the early days I received help and advice from the information on the Hare Preservation Trust website and also from the author of the information and I would guess from the information given me (and the reading I've now done) that "your" leveret was less than 48 hours old - the eyes are not yet fully round which I believe is an indication of age in the first few days.
Hope he survived. And it's a lovely photo. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
