Red face [ID]Mammal dropping

Hi WAB'ers!

I have found this last night and, if possible, would like to get the 'culprit' ID'd if poss. It was 3-4mm or so and dry. It looked dry. I didn't feel it... I guess it was a rat or mouse species.

Any suggestions welcome

Take care,

Jason

Thankyou.

Sorry Kayleigh, I forgot to say - it was in a shed.

Re: [ID]Mammal dropping

It doesn't look like a typical mouse / rat dropping. Mouse droppings can be up to 6mm long, 2 mm wide ,very hard when dry and don't crumble like bat droppings do. Rat droppings are much larger, 15-20mm long and about 6mm wide, not very nice at all, usually have a tapered /pointy end.

Bat droppings crumble to a fine dust, the width and length vary depending on the species of bat. Try and get a closer look to see if there are insect remains or give it a rub to see if it crumbles.

However any dropping can vary both in size and colour!

Shirl

Re: [ID]Mammal dropping

Thanks. My estimate could be a little off - I'll get back to you. Thanks!

Re: [ID]Mammal dropping

Its hard to tell from the photograph, but it looks a bit moist for a bat dropping.

As shirl said, bat droppings normally crumble to dust if you rub them. If it is bats you might find other droppings, urine spotting or even insect wings if it is somewhere they can hang up to feed (depending on species).

Oh right. If I find any more I'll have a look at opening one up...

Re: [ID]Mammal dropping

Nothing much I can add that hasnt already been suggested, it does look a little odd for a Rodent dropping. A clearer shot would help, as would checking the texture of the dropping to see how crumbly or firm it is.
I would say though, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly Jason, if you decide to pull one apart...

Re: [ID]Mammal dropping

Thanks, good advice! I wouldn't have done it by hand though...

If I get the chance again I'll get a better pic.
