Here's a very poor shot (it was dawn on a rainy day!). I called the Fox in, the deer just happened to be walking across the road when I took a few pics - the one on the road is a Red Deer calf, it's mother can just be seen entering the trees. There's even a hoody crow on the road beyond!
Photo taken some years ago at Moine Mhor in Argyll.

Recently i've been seeing lots of foxes & they seem to be always near the deer, yet to get a shot i'm happy with though

| | | Re: Fox & the Stags Nice shot! I think most potential mothers get less tolerant of predators as they approach the breeding season. In some areas, foxes can be a significant predator of deer fawns. In his 2004 doctorial thesis for the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Anders Jarnemo wrote:
" Of the 216 fawns [monitored from 1986 to 1999 in Ekenas, Southern Sweden], 113 (52%) died before the age of eight weeks. The by far most common cause of mortality was predation by red Fox, accounting for 81% of total mortality and 88% of known mortality causes."
Overall, Dr. Jarmemp's data show that foxes took 91 (42%) of the 216 calves monitored during his study. Of course, that's not to say that predation rates are this high in the UK, or that Red Deer experience similar losses. Indeed, in the latest Mammals of the British Isles Rory Putman and Steve Hall note that foxes are the main predator of Roe in Great Britain and are a "suspected" predator of Red Deer.

Marc. |
