Killer Whale in Scotland

Just when seals thought it was safe to go back into the water

There is an interesting story and amazing photos here ....

Killer whale flips seals out of water with its tail - Telegraph

One of the disappointments of my recent trip to Shetland a few weeks ago was missing out on seeing the Orcas that were reported around the coast whilst I was there.

I still have a longing to see these wonderful sea mammals .... even if it is not accompanied by action like this.

Richard

Amazing something you only see on David Attenborough. Didn't see anything on the news.

Re: Killer Whale in Scotland

Great pictures. The other story of them coralling eiders to waiting youngsters is most interesting too.
I've seen them overseas, but I'd love to see killer whales in British waters.

Regards, Chris

Re: Killer Whale in Scotland

It was only yesterday evening I watched a programme featuring BBC cameraman Gordon Buchanan who has just returned from 2 weeks on Shetland in search of killer whales - He didn't get a sniff. Great pictures - a once in a lifetime experience.

Amazing. It would be great to see these animals so close to home.

Re: Killer Whale in Scotland

As a quick post-script to this thread - I understand Simon King has moved up to Shetland for a year. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if we were to see him in some future programme giving the killer whale the full "Simon King treatment."
A tremendously talented cameraman and presenter, indeed, I can't imagine him being up there for a year and NOT devoting time to seeking out this elusive mammal.

Re: Killer Whale in Scotland

Part of the reason for this tossing the pry business is to help
get rid of some of the skin.

I've watched the same behaviour with Elephant seals and
penguins in the Falklands.

The elphant seals also chse the penguins on land and catch
them - they may be fat and ugly but they can sure move; I
made an hurried exit from a bit of beach once!!

Re: Killer Whale in Scotland

More Shetland Orca information .... it makes me even more disappointed that I did not see them on my recent trip to Shetland.
