it is deffinetly not a Roe deer it is bigger than an adult female roe already and we have a few roe fawns so it is definetly not any of the deer mentioned in the first post.

Its either a Red or a Sika Deer fawn. The problem is they are very similar, where did this deer come from? where in the UK are you?

re: id baby deer

unfortunatly it was picked up by some kids in the berkshire area, it is not injured and was probably just sleeping while the mum was grazing. once he is ready he will be released back to the same area, an id would help us to wean him properly on to the correct food and how he should be housed as he grows.

Looks like Red to me.

Is the rump patch borderd by black or is it all buff-coloured?

I guess this is a problem, people removing youngsters without just cause. I'm sure they meant well.

re: id baby deer

i cant remember i didnt think to take a picture of his bum, im back at work on monday so can check then, also if it helps his feet are hairy like a a horse feathers and he has long hair around his neck like a mane. i have had a look on the net at some other pics and i am 90% sure he is a Red Deer as the sika fawn picks show much paler coat colour and smaller ears. his ears are huge like a moose.

Re: id baby deer

Hi Eownk,

Are there Red Deer in Berkshire? If there isn't anything wrong with this youngster I would have tried to put it back out, as long as you know the exact location. We have done it with 2 roe kids this year, i know it is risky but can work. what you have to do to get rid of human smell is wearing gloves take the deer to the exact spot or very near to where it was picked up, using tufts of grass and mud if necessary rub the fawn from head to foot with the mud and grass and leave him. It is beat to do this at dusk, the mother won,t be far away, I fear the longer you leave it you won,t be able to do it.

If you do manage to hand rear it you would have to think about soft releasing it back to the area from where it came from and not just let it go without support feeding. Sorry if I sound bossy, just talking from experience, hope this may be of some help

Re: id baby deer

To me, the black vertebral stripe suggests Fallow. It would be good to know the nearest town to where he was found.

The black vertebral stripe is found on both sika and Red Deer as well.

But isn't it more prominent in Fallow Deer?

Hi Henrya

Yes, but it tends to be more prominant in the calves of Red & Sika until their first moult.

Going on the decription of the tail I would still say Red, but a back-end pic would help.

Re: id baby deer

Here's a pic of a Red Deer calf i found this year

Going by the pics from eowynk i would say it's a Red Deer, if it had a tail it would be a Fallow Deer but none of the pics show the back end

Re: id baby deer

The identification of this lovely fawn still poses a question. Are there Red Deer in Berkshire?
