Re: Tracks and signs images needed.

Hi all

I woke this morning to find that there'd been visitors overnight right up to my front door and all over the field.
I'm wondering if anyone can help ID these. I think one's a fox (though it could be the neighbours Husky I guess, or maybe both).. but the deer tracks are so big (6 inches) that I'm quite astounded, and am considering whether I've had a demon come visit, since they seem more the size of Reindeer tracks I've found on North American sites than British species.

Any help greatly appreciated (For added info, I live on the Northamptonshire/Buckinghamshire border)

Of course you're more than welcome to use any of these pictures that may be useful :-)

Re: Tracks and signs images needed.

Okay, I've just realised the 'deer' tracks are probably rabbits, complete with tail marking in the last picture.

Sorry!
(I cant find how to delete the previous thread, or move it to an ID one)

Unusual (to me anyway ) footprints in my garden this morning, in the snow.

Approx 2" long, in a V shape, one either side, possibly with a little mark where the two meet. Sorry, just discovered camera not working otherwise I'd have posted a piccie.

I'm assuming it's some kind of deer? It came over from next door (6' fence) and must have gone over to garden on other side. We do live on edge of country but I haven't seen deer near houses before.

What really puzzles me is that it was a single line of tracks?

I may have to stay up tonight to look out

Thanks in anticipation.

Sounds like a roe deer passing through. The back foot often steps into the track of the front to minimize enegry in deep snow, this can sometimes appear as a straight line.

Yes your deer prints are rabbits, the top middle and right are hard to make out possible rabbits also. The middle bottom ones show nicely fox prints (Photo 3 shows it best). The other bottom ones are rabbits too.

I found some roe tracks today in the snow (id'd on some droppings and the sheer size of the gait)

Re: Tracks and signs images needed.

Hi

Can someone confirm these are Muntjac droppings and tracks and I will add them to the tracks & signs section.

There is too much for Rabbit (we don't get them anyway) and the bits are larger, about 10mm long. The tracks are 5-6 inches apart though I've only noticed them this morning so will have thawed a bit yesterday. Whatever it was polished off a plate of red millet, the only birds I've seen eating it are the pigeons and pheasants.

Cheers

Robin

Re: Tracks and signs images needed.

Another example of badger tracks rather nicely showing the furrow caused by the low slung belly of the beast

Re: Tracks and signs images needed.

Badger again. I was reliably informed that these marks are made by the front claws of a Badger. Why, I do not know Since spotting these, I have seen similar signs of Badger activity in other areas inhabited by them. I'd love to find out why they do this:

Talking Re: Tracks and signs images needed.

I have added a photo to the image Gallery (Unidentified spoors) of some droppings which were found in my back garden. These droppings were amongst the remains of a blackbird which had been totally eaten except for feathers. Any ideas as to what animal left them?
