We were out in the garden quite late last Saturday transferring fish from the small pond into the big one,thinking it would be easier to catch them at that time as we could find them with the torch and there were 3 or 4 (they were moving so quick amongst the trees) bats wooshing about all round us |

| | Re: Day flying bat Hi guys I just came across your forum. I see bats during the day all the time. It seems crazy but they are definitely bats.
I first started seeing them at night. I live in South Florida on 1 1/4 acres with lots of trees. And then one cloudy afternoon I was gardening and I heard the familiar sound they make as they fly around. I looked up in surprise to see them flying overhead. I thought to myself these guys are crazy! What are they doing out during the day?
I do not know what species they are? They come out when it is cloudy, when it is sunny, really at any time of the day. They glide and manouver very fast, they change direction in an instant and sometimes it even appears that they will crash into each other. It is truly incredible. I have become very fond of watching them and pointing them out to guest even thu most do not believe me.
bye

What is a bat detector? What kind of bats might the ones flying aroung here be? When they are flying low I can see that their bellies are like a reddish brown.

Can all varieties be seen during the day under the right circumstances?
There are certainly more insects around for the time of year here. | Just an aside, look for Pubs with a river then you can relax and watch the Bats usually Daubentons

bye Atti | Hello Atti,a Bat Detector is a small box of electronics that can be tuned to the very high frequency sounds that bats make it then transmits them at a lower frequency that we humans can hear. Several companies make them;
Petterson,Magenta,Batbox there are different types but Heterodyne are the cheapest and most useful.
You have a lot of Bats in the Florida area this may help University of Florida News - Hurricanes and Halloween: Florida bats on mosquito-feeding frenzy

| | | Re: Day flying bat Hey,
I was walking in Cornwall today and was most intrigued by the behaviour of a bat. It was flying in day light and it would not leave me alone. At first I thought it was injured it was flying so low and dive bombing my head not in an aggressive way, but it cared on for a good 10 minuets! I found it fascinating to watch so thought I would do a bit of research to see if this was normal and found this site! |
