| | | Re: lots of deer Yes I live in Wiltshire and haven't seen them in the rutting season, but we have sika, fallow, roe, muntjac but not Chinese water deer or red deer . I haven't really seen any deer "in action" during the rutting season but maybe I should try to see them in the autumn. I know all about the red deer rut, but not so much about other ruts. Do fallow and roe deer etc make the same sort of roaring sounds that red deer make? What kind of place do I need to go to see them rutting?
Also, we have LOADS of deer around here. We even have them in our back garden now and then!! Its been four roe deer this past year, two adults and two fawns. I haven't named them yet (like the pheasants! - Laurel and Hardy - fat and thin)but I see them around all the time in the neighbouring fields and on my way to the bus stop. Hope that's all right.

I am a big deer fan as well and spend hours going out photraphing them all I need is a better camera when I can afford one!
I dont know how far into Wiltshire you are but 2 really good places to experience deer and the ruts are
The New Forest they are all over the forest but an initial starting point is the Deer Sancturay at Bolderwood where they are in the wild but because they are fed there to encourage them for viewers you can see and take photos quite easily, mainly fallow deer
Arne in Dorest where you will find hundreds of Sika deer, it really is the most beautiful location and the deer are plentiful and used to people roaming around amongst them - see my latest 2 pics taken there and I only have a small canon powershot camera! |

| | | Re: lots of deer Thanks. I've been to Arne last Easter I think and I remember we saw lots of deer there. Also, my sister has been to Bolderwood and I think I'll make a trip down there this autumn.
Thanks, Leifus |

| | | Re: lots of deer I find that Feb/Mar is the time when the roe deer hang around here in big groups. There were 6 in the field in front of us last week. At other times of year we only usually see them in ones, twos or threes, depending on the number of fawns. If you see the Mammal of the Day thread, I posted some pictures.
Mr and Mrs Muntjac have recently had a baby and it has just started going off on it own (although I suspect Mum is not far away). The other evening I came home and went tround to unlock the back door. I stopped dead in my tracks because junior was underneath my garden table. We just stood looking at each other for about 30 seconds until he realised that perhaps he should disappear.
Here is a photo that I took of him later. It was fairly dark so I used a high ISO. I left the fence post in so that you could see his size. I guess the fence post is about a metre high.
He is a cutie, isn't he?

Thanks, Leifus | Hi Leifus.
I wouldn't wait 'til autumn to go to see the Fallow at Bolderwood, as they disperse into the woods for the crop of acorns & Beech mast & the rut.
As Monkey says, the Keeper feeds them during the summer so people can easily see them. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
