| | | Re: Wolf Reintroduction yes or no When is the last recorded date of someone dying in the snow in Kent? What utter nonsense. As for advice to Highlanders, Grandmothers, eggs, and the sucking thereof come to mind.

The point is the snow may not be in evidence when you set out, especially if you set out from a town, but, especially in hilly areas, the road can block up within half an hour! | there are plenty of lanes in kent where you can easily get stuck - but the sailent points are that a) even in deep snow you could easily walk to a house or be rescued by the emergency services and b) no one is talking about introducing wolves to kent so this is totally irrelevant to this thread.
Those who live in remote areas like the highlands and islands will be well aware of the risk of snow and carry supplies, blankets etc in their cars anyway - if you think otherwise you could always cite some reports of motorist deaths from hypothermia - if you can find any

Or not, as the case may be.

| | | Re: Wolf Reintroduction yes or no Why not let half a dozen or so go in The New Forest or The Yorkshire Moors, maybe even The forest of Dean, just to see how it goes.
If all goes well and if everyone is happy with them try a few in Scotland somewhere.
How about that for an idea?

Dave | Wonder how they'd get along with the Wild Boar that have already been illegally released there? Only one way to find out.....

| | | Re: Wolf Reintroduction yes or no I met a lady about eight years ago who was very much in favour of wolves being released in Scotland. Her dutch husband has a very large estate "way up north" she claimed that the wolves could survive very easily feeding on deer,I mentioned that sheep, being slower, would be much easier to feed on. The answer was that the owner could be compensated !
I also mentioned that they may take the occasional shepherd ,for which I recieved a "withering " look and was told that it had never been recorded ,someone being killed and eaten by woves,
I have to say though that the lady in question seemed to be,up to that point a fairly normal person |

I have to say though that the lady in question seemed to be,up to that point a fairly normal person | the large estates with lots of deer dont tend to have many sheep - and as to them eating shepherds i'm with the lady in question on that *withering look*

For me - Wolves are a 'step-too-far'.
Whilst in North America the Wolfpacks life is I believe 'shadowing' the Caribou herds , a migratory species ----- (I'm sorry but I don't know what a Spanish Wolfpacks main food source is - Boar ? ) --- but in Scotland there's an established Game Hunting ( with conservation as a-sometimes delibarate, sometimes an accidental by-product ) Industry, with Red Deer as the Game, which gives much needed rural employment to Scottish folk. Add to that, the Grouse Shoot. I can't see the two co-existing.
I'd certainly support the extensions of the Native Caledonian Scots Pine forests, a la Glen Affric.
When there would be enough of those Scot Pine woodlands re-established - (in about 100 years for 'any' kind of maturity) - perhaps there could be Wild Boar.
This Island simply isn't big enough for the Wolf.
