Also British wolves are gone they are extinct - they can never be replaced its wrong to think that you can just stick something back and everything will be ok. The world has turned, the ecosystem that existed when wolves were common has gone due to increased human population, hunting, farming and peat harvesting - only the skeleton of it remains....
As my mother says, when its gone its gone' and ok she was usually referring to crisps or cake but its true, what we have lost is irreplaceable.
we should learn from it and use the lessons to protect what we still have - water voles and sand lizards might not be as high profile or glamerous as wolves but they very definately need our help...... | I have to say that, sad as it is, I completely agree with you. As human population expands there will be nowhere eventually left for them and I would hate to think they were destined to be hunted down once more. I would love for them to be in the wild but that eco system is never coming back, quite sad really.

| | | Re: Wolf Reintroduction yes or no In eight pages of postings, forgive me if I have overlooked a similar comment but I keep thinking Wolves in the UK countryside Even if limited to the Scottish Highlands, this is a different prospect than wolves living in the Vast Wilderness areas in Canada / America and the prospect is rather worrying!
Many people have a firm 'Red Riding Hood' idea of what a wolf is like and will take a lot of convincing that this would be a good idea.
I guess that I am saying if there was a poll I would vote No, not such a good idea for us here in UK. |

| | | Re: Wolf Reintroduction yes or no If there was a poll I'd vote no too, only because of what happened recently to a boar that got into a school grounds. It was shot because it was either distressed or disorientated, can't remember which.
I think our wildlife is stressed enough as it is, badgers being culled because of the apparent risk of bovine tb and so on. A new, major predator, could have devastating consequences. |

| | | Re: Wolf Reintroduction yes or no Whilst flicking through the posts today I cant help smiling at the irony of it all . On the one hand we have people wanting to reintroduce the wolf and on the other we have people stressing because a darling little grass snake is eating the fish in the garden pond. So they want to move it on.
It really is a good reflection of the human race as a whole . Theres people frantically trying to return to lost times where the wild woods still existed and theres others who want everything controlled and nice and neat and tidy..
Surely we should learn one lesson and that is virtually all changes made by man are for the worse. Why cant we for once stop sodding about with everything and say right chaps this is where we are , Lets preserve this....

And do you mean that we should preserve Mink and Signal Crayfish because they are here? If we agree that we can try and eradicate Mink and Signal Crayfish - probably reduce is more likely - then surely reintroducing water voles and native crayfish to those areas is a natural extension. Personally I think it is great to see all those red kites on the M40 and surrounding areas - all a result of reintroduction by man. What seems to happen is the people have no qualms with reintroducing red kites, bustards or ospreys but draw the line at wolves. So maybe the response is not really driven by reintroduction at all! |

However if they remain totally protected who is to say in 10 or 20 years time might the call be to cull them as they are having an adverse effect on other species.. point been we dont / cant predict what effect changes have on the eco system...
