So the good dosing of Holy Water the other squirrel thread recieved obviously brought about some good!
I've been here before, so this is just a quick in and out comment!!! Certainly this is the best thing in non red areas at least because not to release them and in some cases to put healthy animals down is just cruel. The laws of population dynamics together with the negative effects of culling mean that releasing them is going to have no impact one way or the other on their numbers.

It's a shame to see the Reds under threat, but with them being vastly out numbered, I'm afraid that they are destined to become extinct in this country - it's only a matter of time.
I suppose it's only right that people will try to help the Reds, but the Greys will multiply faster than they can be culled.

This is terribly bad news...and once again highlights the stupidity of the sentimental public who have no understanding of basic ecology.

I shall re-order my air rifle and do my bit to combat the numbers being re released

Grey Squirrels are classed as vermin in most areas, they are not only a nuisance in the winter invading the bird tables etc but they will kill the fledglings of nesting birds and take eggs etc they are as bad if not worse than Magpies, I have heard of them being shot in our area when the numbers get too high

Sorry folks i am with tufftie on this one,not that i dont love the reds they are beautiful too,but i think its a fight of the strongest and fittest and the greys must be just that.

Personally if they are released in areas well away from "Red" areas the impact will be negligible as these numbers are so miniscule compared to those at liberty anyway. Where they are a pest they will continue to be controlled by shooting + trapping.
