| | | Chinese Water Deer Whilst on our two week holiday we stayed at one property that was to say the least idyllic. It was based on a farm and was in the middle of a field surrounded by woods. We were lucky enough to see Roe Deer and Muntjac from our window on a daily basis as well as Woodcock which could be seen from the window at dusk. Red legged & Grey Partridge were also visitors that could be seen from the window as well as Green & Great spotted Woodpeckers. The latter half of the week also produced a showy, but flighty, Garden Warbler. On top of this one of the woods, that was about 400 yards away, produced at least two, possibly three, Nightingales. What more could you want.
It was located near Swaffham and was an ideal second week stay for the Norfolk coast from Wells to Kings Lynn as well as the middle reaches of Norfolk.
Our first week was based at Eccles (about 15 miles north of Great Yarmouth) and was the same place we stayed at last November. This covered from Wells through to Cromer and down along the eastern coast.
On one of the days I went down to Minsmere and on the way came across a small heard of Deer. I have posted one photo. I am not an expert on Deer but my impression is that they are Red Deer. Am I right?
Just before I got to Minsmere I stopped off at Dunwich Heath and scanned Minsmere from the Dunwich Heath car park. Whilst doing so I spotted a Deer that was possibly about 500 yards away (shown in the 2nd photo – which I’m sure is a Chinese Water Deer | Wild About Britain) Again, am I right?
I have also attached photos of some of the Roe Deer seen from the living and bedroom windows of our second weeks accommodation.

| | | re: Chinese Water Deer The second picture is not a Chinese Water Deer, it looks too big and the head/ear shape is wrong - not quite sure what it is though... |

| | | re: Chinese Water Deer Do you know i have always thought Muncjac and Chinese Water Deer were the same thing.
Now i think i am incorrect.
I don't think that 2nd pic is CWD John..........looks to large and don't they have some sort of rear protruding fang or similar.
In fact i am so useless with Deer id except Fallow i think they all look like Red to me in those pics.
Bring on the experts. |

| | | re: Chinese Water Deer What sort of size were the deer in the first picture?
Now im definately no expert but i'd be cautious going for red deer as im not sure there in that area (but could be wrong), in which case id be more inclined to say sika or fallow.
the second one does appear to have tusks so could be a chinese water deer.
good shots by the way.

| | | re: Chinese Water Deer I too think this is a red deer - a hind. I've seen quite a few chinese water deer around Leighton BUzzard and they look like and this is going to sound stupid but they look like an evil roe deer. What I mean I guess is you see the deer and it's the same size as a roe and you expect it to be a roe but it looks paler and it's rear end seems to be a different shape sort of hunched, but roes are so pretty and this thing really isn't! It turns aound and looks at you and honestly big black staring eyes pointy upward ears it looks evil I tell you and it has fangs too - not that I've ever been close enough to see those! They seem to like to lie up by hedges - at least the ones I saw did. |

I spent six months winter before last working 7 miles south of Minsmere and can officially state that they have red deer - actually even my site had red deer though I only ever saw the (huge) hoof prints to show they'd been there! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
