Re: Mammal of the day

Was having fun watching a grey squirrel mating chase earlier on today...twas very silly!!! They were all confused chasing each other in smaller circles while all heading in the same direction as the female. They travel at some speed through those trees too!!

Re: Mammal of the day

My mammal of today is a sneaky little Water Shrew, almost got a brilliant pic, not there yet though so not gallery standard I am afraid. It was so active , foraging and diving around and the distances it covered in a few minutes you just would not believe! Will keep trying for that perfect shot

Re: Mammal of the day: Foxes

My mammal of the day is a "Fox". In fact two foxes, both in my garden, both regular visitors. I've just set up a WebCam if anyone would like to have a look at them today (in right hand column of my Nature Diary below). The female looks very pregnant, and I'm hoping she will use the den under my shed (used previous years). Any time now by the looks of her.... she's pretty tubby! Then the male will have his work cut out feeding her for a couple of months...

Re: Mammal of the day

I'm assuming it was a Pipistrelle as they are our most common bat, but there was one flitting round my garden at about 6:30 this evening.

Often see them in the summer but have never seen one this early in the year before.

No, I'm not ID-ing, that was just a question - I don't know much about mice. I couldn't tell whether its ears were big enough for a Wood Mouse, and house and wood are the only two I've any experience of!

I sometimes fined Wood Mice / yellow necked mice under the corrugated iron that i put down for reptiles and they are very cute They've kinda dug a small hole and have made a grass nest in it and there's always a little trail of seeds etc leading to it

Re: Mammal of the day

My mammal of the day today... is a gorgeous Badger that visited my garden last night.

Take a look at the video I took with my infra-red camera

Adorable (in my opinion!)

Re: Mammal of the day

Tigger, fab footage of the Badger she does look in good condition (as all Mums do)

Kaylieigh, that does look like a Wood Mouse to me, dont forget to feed it.

I tried my hardest not to photograph deer this week end and spent some time with my new camera in an area Ive not been to before, the locals call it Watership Down. It was Full of different wildlife and countless birds some ive not seen for years.

Saw a black Rabbit (not Doug) and countless hares and this Roe buck whos antler velvet was flapping around his head.

This is known as being ''in tatters'' hence the saying.

This Hare ran 100yds across a field to tell the partridge something I couldnt tell what they were talking about as they were to far away.

Regards

Rob.

Re: Mammal of the day

Thanks Rob. Why do you think my Badger is pregnant. How can you tell it's a female. Am I missing something? I can't tell the difference. Hope she/he comes again... I'll be waiting with camera on tripod!

Re: Mammal of the day

Tigger
No youve missed nothing I think I mixed your Fox up with your Badger. I do think the head and neck size looks ladylike, as for the pregnancy most Badgers would have given birth by now, as you know.

Just put my ramblings down to my old age and too much fresh air.
Apologies
Rob

Re: Mammal of the day

Back to my favourite species again For some reason the person i'm sharing a house with for the next few weeks decided to keep the heating on full blast and it's like a hothouse in here - so obviously i opened the window, despite frost. I have been chasing squirrels out of my room - for some strange reason they think I have nuts in here...are insisting I have nuts in here!!! They are funny things - full of character

Oh and in comes Hobbit - the boss squirrel - best go get some nuts now as she wont take no for an answer!!!

You lucky thing seamusagleann!

Mine has to be the Pipistrelle Bats I saw in my garden tonight. Still pretty early, but loving the moths that the warmer day had brought out.
