Dave P. | Go get a tick remover from the vets..You have no chance of leaving the mouth parts in then...
You also don't want to risk killing the tick and it staying in the hogs that will also cause infection. |

| | | Re: Mammal of the day Kayleigh, the oil treatment method doesnt kill the tick straight away. The tick begins to suffocate, releases its grip on the host and falls off. It also has the advantage of allowing treatment with the minimum of handling, reducing stress on the hog.

| | | Re: Mammal of the day Well that was somewhat less than successful!
Both hogs were at the food so I grabbed my pipette, filled it with the finest extra virgin olive oil and nipped out the back door. As I thought, they both just froze rather than run away, so I went for the larger of the two who clearly had at least three (probably four) ticks last night. Couldn't find any! It's a bit dark on the patio so I carried him round the corner where there's a flood-light on a motion detector. Still couldn't see a single tick to squirt oil on to. So I gave up and put him back by the food bowl.
I reckon it was less than a minute in total so hopefully didn't stress him out too much. I'll be cross if he's back tomorrow with ticks still visible...

| | | Re: Mammal of the day He may have just dislodged them himself Dave if they were within "scratching range". Just been watching the young hog which appeared last night again...seems its using the hedgehog house near the food for its daytime accomodation
