| | | Re: Mammal of the day Travelling home late last night, I saw three foxes. One alone and about half a mile further on a large fox and a smaller one. I assume that it was a vixen and a cub. I slowed down and the vixen stood watching me. |

| | | Re: Mammal of the day Leaning over the gate late last evening watching a young fox cub running round the field(1st cub I've seen here!),he suddenly ran up to a Roe & her 2 youngens (which I hadn't spotted!)then shot off in the other direction really quickly!!!
The deer wandered around for a while then mum hopped over the fence, the other 2 were too small so they were running up & down trying to find a better way through..one did but the other didn't,just kept going up & back making a very soft sqeeky noise!Had to go in cos it was getting dark, hope mum found her baby !
Was a lovely experience to watch as they had no idea I was there.
Have seen 2 adult ones before but 1st time to see the young....wondered where the other adult was....I hope that wasn't what was being shot at the other evening!

| | | Re: Mammal of the day I was at Sutton Hoo at the weekend where my re-enactment group puts on a living history display. Just after lunch in the middle of a busy camp surrounded by visitors we saw a stoat run across the grass about 5 feet away - everyone just stopped to watch it. It's only the second time I've ever seen one so I was suitably impressed for the rest of the day. |

About 10 mins after this a army helicopter flew over and it was so low that I didnt see anything for the rest of the afternoon because it scared everything away |

Grrr. I transgress - Sorry!
Lovely to see deer - we have them round here but they're very evasive and usually too far away to photograph.

| | | Re: Mammal of the day Driving home from Croydon this evening and just past Crittalls corner, about 21:15, the sky was full of bats. Can't say what species but probably one of the pipistrelles. I've never before seen so many at once, over 50 and possibly 100.

| | | Re: Mammal of the day My mammal of the day, well technically today anyway, were bats flying low down overhead in the garden. There must have been 4/5, was great to see! and they were clearly having a feast as I got bitten to death by swarms of midges.

Acherontia | one of my favourite animals, i looked out of the front window late last night and saw a hedgehog trotting up the drive and into the long grass on the lawn, (its long because we have had loads of wildflowers in the grass and not cut it this year yet) it spent a good quarter of an hour foraging in the grass before disappearing through the hedge,
there will be a dish of dog food waiting for him tonight if he returns
Brian,
(great pictures , by the way) |

| | | Re: Mammal of the day Really pleased to see 2 mammal species I've not seen before over the last few days.
First was an Otter. We were viewing a loch when a flock of c250 duck starting moving away from the reeds at the back where they had been loafing + there it was- head up + under, tail up. We had c10 minuters watching the Otter constantly diving + emerging as it moved along the back of the loch. A Red Squirrel on a nut feeder by the hide (1 of 3 we saw on the trip) was an added bonus.
The other real thrill was sitting in a baited hide (apparently the one used by Springwatch) one evening. At first just a couple of Wood Mice coming + then a several Red Hinds with a couple of fawns, but then just as we were about to give up a Pine Marten appeared. He soon shinned back up the tree as he detected the first of 4 Badgers ( much smaller than English ones- they were adult). The Pine Marten crept round the front while the Badgers scoffed at the back, to secrete away an egg. A bit later another 2 Pine Martens arrived giving incredible views. The local guide who had been here c20 times said this was the best performance hed seen + we were really lucky. I was so chuffed to see this stunning animal! |

| | | Re: Mammal of the day A poor little wood mouse at RSPB Elmley Marshes today who was almost completely bald...
Obviously something not right but apart from the hair-loss he seemed perfectly okay, scurrying about and hoovering up the seeds under the bird table. I was lying on the ground to get low-level shots of house sparrows and a juvenile blackbird when I saw him. At one point he ran right up to me, between my arms as I was holding the camera in front of me. (I'm saying "he" because this looks like male pattern baldness to me! )

Dave P. | Poor little thing, wonder what on earth is wrong with it and it does make it look at bit conspicuous too, hope it will be allright
