Harold.
Ps. The photograph was taken last September. | Don't wannae get into an argument or anything, but I don't think your mouse is a House Mouse.
Looks much more like a Wood Mouse to me...

Doug | I thought the same but wanted to wait until I could view the full size image (it hadnt been approved when i looked earlier). Having looked at it full size, I`m inclined to agree with Doug, I`d say Wood Mouse too.

| | | Re: Mammal of the day Hallo Everyone,
Thank you for pointing out that my photograph is a Wood Mouse and not a House Mouse.
I was told it was a House Mouse some years ago and didn't think to check whether the information was incorrect or not. I have now looked at examples of Wood and House Mouse on the web, and in my recently aquired Mammal Guide, and agree with you all that it is a Wood Mouse. I will correct my own records but can anyone tell how I can correct it on the gallery. I tried but got nowhere fast!
Tigger,
The only time I have seen the Wood Mouse is during the day. It comes out whenever the weather is fine and sits in the bird feeder for anywhere between 10 and 30 minutes feeding or just looking about. I assume it also comes out at night but I have never noticed it. I saw it once feeding alongside a Grey Squirrel which was quite amazing to see. Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me at the time.

I wish my Wood Mouse came out in daylight more... he's a bit secretive. I only know he's there because of my infra red CCTV.
Isn't it always the way with cameras... you never have them when you REALLY need them.. |

| | | Re: Mammal of the day Todays contribution was very nearly a lovely conditioned Dog Fox, just after first light this morning, but he cottoned on to me before I could get a few shots
Instead, it`s this Red Squirrel. I`d watched him at one of the squirrel feeders for a while, a bit too far for a pic, so I had to creep round the path and approach from a different angle. Luckily, he was pretty tolerant of my quiet approach and sat still while i rattled off a few pics.
A little later I heard 2 different Foxes howling away on a nearby island, the first time i`d heard them at this particular site. I guess mating is imminent from the noise and commotion they were making.Didnt see a single Roe deer, which was very unusual, but aswell as the Squirrel in the pic, I watched several more using the squirrel feeders and the nearby trees. And it actually stayed dry while I was there!!

Mark H | Mark sounds like you had a good day. That's a lovely photo and I had no idea that there were Red Squirrels in Gosforth Park. I lived within a mile of there for 18 years!
I have never seen a Red Squirrel. I wish we had them here.

Last night I saw my dearest favourite male Badger, and this week I have seen Sneezy the Fox, she has always sneezed since a cub, she's about 2 years old, and limps too. They are out late though after midnight. |

| | | Re: Mammal of the day Hi Stripee!
Thanks, and I'm certain I will!
In the summer, I see Foxes and Badgers (At night! ), too! But I don't the rest of the year because I'm not allowed to stay up that late!
But in the Summer holidays, there's no school for 6 weeks, so I get to stay up late!

I can see...
1 pheasant
2 Jackdoors
1 pigeon
several bluetits
3 sparrows
2 starlings
1 robin (with the reddest breast I've ever seen!)
and 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker!
and some other birds I don't know the names of!

| | | Re: Mammal of the day It was Hobbit the squirrel again, will try and get a piccy of her. She's quite old for a wild squirrel, been around for about 6 years now and still the boss squirrel! She was following me around while I was gardening today and not letting other squirrels near...I had a bag of walnuts in shells you see she's only got half a tail to - caught out by one of those cute, furry cats - but somehow it seems to add to her character.

| | | Re: Mammal of the day Mine for yesterday was a group of Roe deer at one of my regular local haunts. I`d spotted a lovely conditioned buck in full velvet grazing in the middle of a field of rough grassland, and was busy crawling towards him to get within range for a pic or three. Unbeknown to me, there were 4 others to my right, totally obscured by the tall grasses as they grazed. Was just about the get close enough to start shooting the buck, when the others became aware of my presence and bolted, taking the buck with them too. So no pics this time, but a nice sight all the same.
Crawling through 2 inches of water in a flooded field was no fun though (and probably did my arthritis a world of good - i was a stone heavier with waterlogging by the time i went home ).
