Re: Mammal of the day

This chap was hanging around our garden all day in the pouring rain. He is looking suitably glum considering how awful the weather was. I am wondering if Mrs Roe Deer is otherwise occupied giving birth to Junior? Hopefully!

He was still around at 8.00pm this evening and I snapped this in the half dark.

Still looking very bedraggled.

My turn to be jealous of you Jenny - badgers and roe deer!

Lovely photos by the way.

Re: Mammal of the day

I had a bit of trouble deciding what to post, so here's my mammals of the day. Both are garden regulars.

Re: Mammal of the day

That's a great picture Paul. BTW have you seen any cubs yet? We've got 5 male foxes but no vixens, perhaps they are underground feeding their cubs. the male foxes aren't eating the food we put out they're carrying it away, do you think they are taking it to the vixens. I'm looking forward to seeing the cubs, soon I hope.

I saw my woodmouse run across the garden just in front of me, as I was changing out of my walking boots.

Re: Mammal of the day

Well its good to see everybody having success with their MOTD well done.

At last I have somthing to post, the early morning bluebell shots wern't to good as its still a bit early for them so a quick detour to Alresford's chalk stream's proved a bit more fruitfull.

On a half mile walk 3 no. groups of . . burrows ( I bet thats incorrect ) and 4 seperate sightings of Water Voles.

One local Chap said his record sighting on this small piece of river was 10 voles in one day and also spoke of Otter activity.

Allways busy doing something, mostly eating, facinating little things and how they swim with those small paws/hands is beyond me.

Will be gong back to see them again.

Regards

Rob

Re: Mammal of the day

You can never have too many!

I spotted one this lunchtime in the brook by the town car park, then someone came to ask me what I was doing, and pretty soon there were three of us hanging over the railings watching this vole eat nettles.

Whereabouts was this, Rob?

Re: Mammal of the day

Kate,
the river is the Alre, teeming with trout perch roach and pike, the village is Alresford, famous for watercress and the steam railway, in Hampshire about 8 miles north east of Wincheaster.

The stretch of river is between the Eel House and the Fulling Mill where the water is shallow and crystal clear and is also host to heron and kingfishers.

Its some place.

Regards
Rob

Lovely water vole pics, well done capturing the pose. Sorry but my mammal of the day isn't a water vole it's a cheeky grey squirrel in the garden this afteroon. Talk about laid back!

They're cheeky, aren't they?

OK, indulge me - I'm rubbish at photography and don't often get a decent shot.

It isn't often I get plenty of time to think about angles and compositions when shooting wild subjects, but I had so long to photograph the cub that I actually stopped taking pictures after a period as my 4 gig flash card was all but full. The cub looked straight into the camera (I don't use a hide.) each time the shutter released and I managed to shoot a second shot each time with him looking directly at the lens.

I'm glad you've enjoyed the pics Kayleigh.

Regards Chris
