| | | Grey Foxes Hi. I came across this site searching for information about grey foxes. I was walking home earlier this evening in a built up area of liverpool and I am certain one ran in front of me. I have seen the occasional red fox in this area but I would be interested to hear from anyone who could tell me if there is an urban grey. thanks |

And welcome to WAB!
I've not heard of grey foxes but if you ask on the mammal forum you may be able to get a bit more info.
Good luck in your quest!

| | | Re: info request Hi, I have never heard of grey fox either - It wasn't a small wolf was it ? Monksters advice about asking on the mamal forum is a good bet for an answer though.

| | | Re: Grey Foxes The underfur of foxes is pretty much grey in colour, so if the topcoat is missing (probably due to mange) then the fox would look grey rather than the usual reddy orange. |

| | | Re: Grey Foxes thanks to those who replied. Ithought I may have been mistaken until I bumped into a neighbour earlier who said he had seen a grey fox from his bedroom window last night. I wish I could have taken a photo but it was gone in a flash.I will continue to visit this site , I have found it to be very interesting |

Hi, and welcome.
They are called Silver (Red) fox, rare to see this colour in the wild. I have only seen a couple in my life time. |

| | | Re: Grey Foxes There is a Grey (Gray) Fox, but this is a North American species, which is in a different genus to our native Red Fox (also in NA), so any fox you see here will be this species, though pelage (fur) can vary in colour. |

| | | Re: Grey Foxes I've not seen a grey fox, but can confirm what others have said about foxes with mange looking grey/black at times and in certain light. Same applies sometimes if the y are wet, or have recently emerged from underground... the urban "grubby" fox as opposed to the "urbane" red
They're generally fairly active at night this time of year, so if it's local you may get other sightings. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
