| | | Do Muntjac bark? I was out listening to nightingales in Pin Mill Woods on Monday when I heard what sounded like a Roe deer barking in the undergrowth (didn't manage to see it). I've never seen Roe around here but I frequently see Muntjac. Do Muntjac bark like Roe?

| | | Re: Do Muntjac bark? Muntjac tend to bark every five seconds (when they are barking!). They also stamp their feet, and make a starnge chittering sound that I'm not sure how they produce.

| | | Re: Do Muntjac bark? We heard one scream in Holkham Woods in Norfolk the other week.
Made me jump out of my skin..........it's quite a blood curdling sound.
Didn't realise what it was until we saw a couple later. |

| | | Re: Do Muntjac bark? I think Muntjac were the speciesi that realy got me into wildlifer watching. Back where I gre up (villages south east of Coventry) we have a large population of Muntjacs that have been there since at least the 70s.
I saw them last week on a return visit to my parents.
They are lovely species and not too hard to see. |

| | | Re: Do Muntjac bark? This thread has probably answered my question about what I hear barking in the woods at night sometimes. I know it is not dogs but I assumed it was foxes. (Do foxes bark?). I had no idea that deer bark. How can I tell whether it is roe or muntjac? We get both around here but more roe than muntjac.

I have seen a couple of Roe, but not too many, and certainly not as many as I have Muntjac!
Never heard them bark though, usually because we are in the car i guess! |

| | | Re: Do Muntjac bark? Roe Deer are occasional barkers - but Muntjac are definitely serial barkers - once every five seconds when they get into it.
