The reason you are seeing grey's with a tint of red/brown is due there summer coat which is usually darker and has a more brown/orange blend in it, as they get there full winter coat they will become more grey/white. Obviously individual animals will vary but as a general rule this is why it happen's. |

Obviously individual animals will vary but as a general rule this is why it happen's. | This is indeed the reason for this colouring in the greys you are seeing, it also happens in Red Squirrels only they take on more of a grey tint to their coats.
I have heard that some people can confuse both squirrels at this time of year but that seems unlikely given the big difference in their sizes,although I suppose if you are unlucky enough to live in a part of G.B. where our native reds have been killed off and you have not seen one for real this may happen
I was lucky to see a Red Squirrel that had an almost black colour to it's coat a few years ago but again this was probably due to a seasonal change in it's coat (That was before the dreaded Grey arrived in my area).
