| | | Hearing Bats Ok this might sound like a stupid question but is it possible to hear Bats? I ask because nearly every night I hear a sort of constant (but changing) high pitched noise almost like a cricket noise at night but a bit different and when I have been watching Bats the noise goes louder as they fly overhead and quieter when they fly away so I always presumed it was them, but no one else in my family can hear them. |

| | | Re: Hearing Bats I can certainly hear some bats (someone once told me they're most likely Noctules), but many people can't. It just depends how good your high frequency hearing is.

| | | Re: Hearing Bats Well I can certainly hear Pipistrelle species and a few others. It depends a lot on the listener's quality of hearing. Many people can't hear goldcrests for example because they are too high pitched.
Cheers,

| | | Re: Hearing Bats Children and women are more likely to be able to hear some bat echolocation as their hearing is better at higher frequencies than mens.
We are pretty sure we heard some bat echolocation while out the one time. We didn't register it at the time but as we were recording we picked the sound up as well as the output from the bat detector speaker and noticed it on play back. |

| | | Re: Hearing Bats Have just tried it out and cant hear Pipistrelle. Seems its out of my hearing range. Could hear the flutter of its wings as it passed over but that was it. Can still hear Goldcrest though, had 2 in the garden yesterday being very vocal.

| | | Re: Hearing Bats One of my more chauvinistic bat acquaintances says the best accessory a chap can have when bat watching is a teenage girl. I'd rather have my slightly more than teenage girl with me when bat watching, if it's all the same with him!

They seem to make a high pitch noise just before they about to fly off for the evening. I wonder if they are testing their environment and if it is safe to leave the nest. (Does a bat live in a nest?) The ones by us live in a big pine tree. |
