I have googled white fox today as i saw one last nite in derby right near the city centre. i grew up in the country in the cotswolds so have seen many foxes this one was unbelievable! I'm at derby uni and quite near the centre, it was just trottin up the road in the middle of the night.. it was a fox totally white, doesnt make any sense to me as there is no woodland around. |

Not white but certainly BLONDE - GOLDEN...I saw a whole family of blonde coloured foxes on Stoborough Heath, near Arne in Dorset...just a few days ago...so late May, 2011. It was dusk and the cubs fled as I stared while the vixen stared back. I hadn't been drinking! They were the colour of a golden labrador. Any info. or comments would be very welcome. A G |

Very interesting Alice. Red foxes come in a wide variety of colours and patterns, but very distinct aberrations (white, silver, golden etc.) are rare in the UK. A few of the many colour variants can be seen here. Fur colour in foxes is under epistatic genetic control, which means that there are several incompletely-dominant genes involved. This leads to the pastel-shades we seen in the fur colour. Have you seen them again? Any photos?

Thank you Mark, I though it was so. Unfortunately I do not live near Arne but am intending to camp down there very soon again to check the foxes out once more. How I wish I had a body switch which when pressed would take photos in any situation. I`m not a camera carrying person really but may make an effort after this! I will inform the RSPB at Arne sooner or later. Thanks again for the interesting info. [and your website pics are tremendous!A]. |

I never used to carry around a camera either, Alice, but now whenever I go out without one I feel kinda naked!
Thanks for the kind comments RE my website - I'm in the process of a major revision of the fox page (and will include the info of the Arne blonde foxes).
