| | | Seal in River Great Ouse Friends had told me that they had seen a seal in the River Great Ouse. I hope this pic is proof. I apologise for the quality; my pump was not extended, there were high nettles between me and the river; and I could not believe my eyes. The seal dived and I tried to follow upstream, but a boat came from each direction and I never saw the seal again. However, it was most exciting; adding to a a good insect and bird day.

| | | Re: Seal in River Great Ouse Looks like a common seal, they do occasionally 'stray' inland. I live a stones throw from the Ouse near the Cambs/Lincs/Norfolk border and I often see them on the river banks when I am out walking (How lucky am I?)
There is a seal rehabilitation centre near to where I live and I believe they release them in the Wash, and I often wonder if they know which way to go! Did you notice if it had a tag on a rear flipper? |

A couple of years ago I saw one in the sea off Felixstowe and it made my day
Do you think they are spreading about more? |

| | | Re: Seal in River Great Ouse Yes, definitely a seal. Can't say for sure what sort.
We used to live close to the Nene in Northants and I don't ever remember seeing one that far up.
We now live on the west coast of Scotland and they're a common (and delightful) sight. |

Do you think they are spreading about more? | A few years ago, when I lived in Suffolk, there was a bit of a stir in the local papers for a while about a seal in the river Deben at Woodbridge. A year or two later I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of it (or another seal). A friend told me that it was still seen there occasionally. I moved away from the area two and a half years ago, so I don't know if it still turns up there. |

| | | Re: Seal in River Great Ouse You can give yourself some gold stars for this one
Indeed an oppurtunity few of us get to see a seal.
Is it possible that the river mentioned could be a regular feeding ground??
Nice one |
