Boxing Hares?

Does anyone know when Hares begin to box (if they haven't already) - it's something I'd really like to see.

Also is there a particularly good time of day? Does it rely on the weather?

Well it's usually spring, whenever that will be this year! It no doubt is related to weather, as soon as it warms up, could even be this weekend..

I've seen this happening twice in the last month so it's already started in the Gloucestershire area. The classic early morning sunlit image of hares boxing is always worth getting up for

I have seen this behaviour most often late evening, about an hour before sunset. Don't know if this is typical or if I have just been lucky. Haven't seen it this year yet however.

The hares are racing about (in the couple of locations that I know) then they run up to each other standing on their hind legs buffet each other rapidly with their front paws it is fascinating to watch

I heard boxing hares are actually females either boxing each other or a male. does anyone have any other info?

If so I would like to see it. I think it would be a good laugh.

As far as I know, hares end up boxing when a female is trying to ward off a male. At least that's what the book said.

Anyway, the rest of my family were lucky enough to see them boxing yeasterday. I went back to the same place today but unfortunately the best I got was them chasing each other around - still good though

Yes, Fournier is right. Since lady hares can't say "I've got a headache" they have to be more direct in repelling unwanted advances!
