Good plan! I'm going to build one before autumn too. We get pipistrelles in our garden so I want to provide somewhere local for them to roost.
I found some instructions on the RSPB web site here: Building a bat box.
There's also a page on the "Friends of Wildlife" web site here: How To Build A Bat Box.

on bird boxes.
The better ones allow the bat to feel secure by touching it on all sides
this site has some good ideas Warwickshire Bat Group
take a look on some of the american sites, their Bat houses are rectangular
and narrow front to back and fairly easy to construct
If you would like to try your own designs pipes with wire-mesh lining
inside to give them something to hold onto a rectangular box with
a roof-tile on the front etc. south/southeast facing are best locations
they do like to be warm
Best commercial boxes are by Schwegler and are used by most Bat Groups
I hope this helps if not just ask
Bats are in the mammal section plenty of info here is another example Bat Boxes for house?

| | | Re: Didn`t know where to post this but since it`s to do with bats. I take it you dont want to put them in the garden or on the house
You would probably need permission to put up boxes anywhere else
Most bats emerge (some from just before sunset) to around 20 minutes
after sunset others up to 40 minutes after. They feed then roost to
digest and defacate (see the thread bat poo)
Most common but still endangered are the little Pipistrelles but to
find out what is in your area look up your local Bat Group or google
bats for your area

bats for your area | Parents won`t let me put one up near the house, even though we have got bats in the back garden.
Sod the permission, it`s a free country i doing something for an endagered species, if they wanna give me a ticket or anything so be it.
I think i might leave it till i get a Bat Detecter (please read my reply in the Bat Detector thread), so then i can detect whether there is any Bats there or not.

if you do not try.............
Regarding permission put yourself in a landowners position when
everyone and their dog decides to "sod permission" and do their
own thing on YOUR LAND
