Welcome to the site.
According to Wikipedia they shed their coats twice yearly, so I wouldn't be too worried. Also with the weather issues we are having at the moment don't be surprised if they don't have more than two moultings. A quick google search should help you. But here's the link I used: Red squirrel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
All the best

| | | Re: Do Red Squirrels molt Thanks you put my mind at rest, especially as this one is the only squirrel we have visiting the garden. Thanks for the link too. |

| | | Re: Do Red Squirrels molt Main moult occurs in Spring (from winter coat to summer) and again in Autumn (from summer coat to winter). Additionally once weaned juveniles moult their fur. Its hard to age the one in your photo but this could be the reason, it gives the impression of one of this years. Typically new hair grows through and displaces the old so they tend not to suddenly look bald, although odd moult occurs in many individuals. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
