| | | Information Required we have a wild hedgehog which we have named Regie. We want to know if he's a boy or girl and as he is quite large is it possible that he is a she and pregnant ( how do you tell ) if so when normally are the babies due and how long are they pregnant for? we feed him/ her chicken/rabbit tinned food which he seems to enjoy. At the moment he has loose bowels is this the food and should we be feeding him/her dried food and which type? can we pick him up to check him over as we don't want to frighten him away. we have built him a nice secure home which he uses regulary. Pictures of his house are in the image library.

In male hedgehogs the penile sheath is located about halfway up the tummy and looks like a large belly-button.
In females the sex organ is directly adjacent to the anus. Females will also have a row of nipples along each side within the tummy fur. These are often hard to see but show as small pink spots if you have the chance to look carefully.

Loose bowels can be a sign of dehydration; what colour are his/her droppings?
I would only pick him/her up if he/she is showing signs of being unwell, and then only with a view to seeking assistance from a Hedgehog Rescue. If you let me know your nearest big city, I can let you know your nearest Rescue (just in case).
Hedgehogs are wonderful animals, and you're lucky to have one visiting your garden.

| | Re: Information Required Thanks for replying to our plea for advise Bob. we have just checked on him and he has eaten most of his food and gone for a walk somwhere,so think he wouldn't do that if he was poorly so we feel better and will keep checking him and learning more about him so that we can care for him better.
