I was about to try and be of assistance, but on checking these ones with cups and without red apothecia I doubt these are Cladonia pyxidata after all, they seem too smooth. Please do educate me.

I am prompted to start sorting through this mass of photos again. If I do find anything that seems to be C. pyxidata I'll post those here and your friend would be welcome to hi-res copies. If need be I can check, I will be at both the Wales and Lancs sites in the coming weeks.

I agree with you that none of those tick the boxes for C. pyxidata.

I haven't knowingly photographed this species yet, but I understand that it is easily confused with C. pocillum and C. monomorpha (the key in Dobson 2011 doesn't distinguish between them), not to mention other Cladonia species. It will be a challenge to be confident of the species from a photo alone. Expert identification in the field and/or material that can be verified might be called for here.

There is a good selection of pictures of this species on Flickr. At least some are likely to have been properly identified: Cladonia pyxidata - Flickr: Search and even 20 or so licensed under Creative Commons.

That's an eye-opener. There are some strong C. pyxidata candidates there, but I'm surprised that the vast majority aren't.

For what it is worth, this is what I understand to be Cladonia pyxidata. I would be interested to know other people's opinions.

Jdev - could they be polydactyla then looks smoother and more sorediate,so poss fimbriata?

Phil, what about chorophaea for these (top ones anyway) as there seem to be some proliferations starting?

1 & 2) Almost completely decorticate, with podetial squamules...

No idea. Some Cladonia squamosa there too methinks.

3 & 4) Looking good for C. pyxidata.
