| | | Crustose lichen It is many years since I last looked at lichens but I thought I would start again, beginning with my garden. I had forgotten how difficult they are
There are large ( 400mm diam ) irregular patches of this on sandstone slabs on top of my wall. Grey with white prothallus, areolate, apothecia irregular with brown disc 1-2 mm diam , K negative.
I'm sure it's a nice easy common one but it would be good to have some help to get me going again.
Many thanks

| | | Re: Crustose lichen Hi Peter - Probably Ochrolechia parella.
A mainly coastal species that is also found on siliceous upland rocks, gravestones etc.
There are a couple of similar Ochrolechia but its the C rather than the K reaction you need to separate them. Ochrolecia parella

I do still have my old 2005 copy of Dobson & O.parella looks right. I just need to familarise myself with the key again.
I haven't got any bleach in the house at the moment, which is why I hadn't tested it, but I'll get some tomorrow.
I'll probably be posting alot more over the next few days until I get more confident , so I hope that will be OK.
