| | Stereocaulon evolutum with apothecia Hi all,
I was pleased to find this today on high moorland gritstone rocks - it appears to be S. evolutum as far as I can tell - slightly digitate and Dobson tells us the Apothecia have a pale margin, which develops to all brown with margin lost, which you can see on these pics and no other Stereocaulons do that. If so, it must be right..................?
Quite unusual apparently to be fertile too?
Grateful for any views/correction before I put in the Gallery!
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: Stereocaulon evolutum with apothecia Thanks Nigel, S dacto isnt out , but I used Dobsons description to reach evolutum because of the Apothecia colouring and edge change..........
I just hoped there was the experience out there to confirm if that would make it only s evo?
Cheers
Ken
(rushing,sorry)

| | | Re: Stereocaulon evolutum with apothecia I agree with Nigel that this is S. dactylophyllum. The scales ('phyllocladia') are coralloid and not wide enough for S. evolutum.
Also, of course, S. dactylophyllum is commonly (usually?) fertile, S. evolutum rarely so. The apothecia look typical for S. dactylophyllum to me.
Sorry.

Alan | Thanks Alan, I was thrown by the pale apothecia margins, not described for Dactylophyllum in Dobson, but seemingly only applying to evolutum.........but I bow to your expertise!
Cheers
