| | | Green Lichen(s) Site: coastal graveyard.
At the time I thought these were separate species. Green Lichen One was growing on concrete covering a large area. It appeared sterile but on examining the images at home I notice a couple of apothecia which I have greatly enlarged. Close by on a prostrate, polished granite headstone, and hence open to full sun and rain, was a similar looking species but covered in apothecia.
Later close comparison of the images suggest they might be the same with the different characteristics being accounted for by the different substrates and positions. Microscopy to follow, if apothecia are mature.
Help and guidance requested as usual.

That was quick. I got started on Physcia by looking through Paul Whelen's excellent litte book, but the images in Dobson shown no sign of any green. If I had found them on your site (looking under crustose!) I may have been more encouraged. You clearly think they are one and the same? Some extra doubt crept in when I read that apothecia are rare (Smith et al), which was certainly the case with the concrete specimen.
The spores are spot on.
Many thanks, Chris |

| Err, they're in the foliose section!
Many lichens are greener when wet and I think fertility can depend on where you are - in SW Ireland I've found plenty of fertile specimens of species which the books say are 'rarely fertile'.
Physcia spores are dark so even without a stain its possible to get a decent image - if you scroll down my page on Physcia aipolia you'll see spore photographs obtained without a stain: Physcia aipolia

Take your point regarding stains: I tend to use stains as they can emphasize other structures such as the paraphyses.
