| | | Cladonia queries These Cladonia species were found on rotting logs of unknown type, in acidic moorland habitat. I have had a go at naming them but would like someone with more knowledge (that's most of you) to offer a considered opinion.
Thank you for looking.
Chris
P.S. The pictures can be found in the Library Images. It refused to open for me to place them here? |

I'll have a crack!
Difficult stuff these moorland Cladonia , but I think you are right with them all - the first one is C chlorophaea in my view as the stalks are well defined and there are some proliferations (stalky bits) on the cup edges.
But I wait to be shot down!
Nice pics by the way.
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: Cladonia queries Hi Chris,
I'll have a stab too:
1. I'm leaning towards C. chlorophaea too, for the same reasons as Ken, but with some doubt due to the size of the basal squamules.
2. I have never knowingly seen C. fimbriata with cups like this. C. ochrochlora gets my vote here, but I'm not familiar with it.
3. Sorediate above, which I think rules out C. squamosa... but I'll pass on this one, at least for now.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling and the helpful comments.
And to Nigel for the confirmation of No.1 and the suggestion for No.2, which I hadn't considered.
Thanks also to Jenny for supporting the previous two and the suggestion for No.3. This one gave me the most trouble: when I first saw it I was reasonably confident that it was Cladonia coniocraea, but the width of the scyphi ruled it out. Cladonia polydactyla was another I hadn't considered so time for some more homework.
Hi Phil - I am aware of Sharnoff's wonderful images: indeed, I have frittered away more time that I will admit to looking at it. However, my first reference sites are Jenny's and Alan S's.
Best wishes,
Chris |

By Alan S's, I guess you mean Alan Silverside's lastdragon.org Images of British Lichens? which again are wonderful photos.
Could you put me wise on Jenny's photos please?....I am not sure that I have found them.
As I have Dartmoor on my doorstep, here is a photo of C. diversa taken yesterday: (if you don't agree, then its back to the drawing board for me ).
regards,
phil
