| | | HELP I.D. for Lichen on tree..poss, hawthorne Hello everyone,
can anyone help me to put a name to this wonderful looking Lichen. I think the tree it was on was a Hawthorne tree, by the coast in Northumberland.
Many thanks,
Jean

The one with the brown, 'jam tart' apothecia is, in all probability, Lecanora chlarotera. There are other species that can be told from L. chlarotera only by chemical and microscopic characters, notably L. horiza, L. pulicaris and L. argentata, but L. chlarotera is much the most likely in your area on hawthorn.
However, you will see in the first photograph that its colonies are mixed in with a second Lecanora, which has buff apothecia covered with a fine, whitish powder and less conspicuous margins. This is L. carpinea. The two often grow together.

(fearing that if I neglect work to show a child a rainbow in my area, I can expect to be beaten up, arrested and fired, all on the one day )

But better than that, you made me laugh with your comment at the end ...very medicinal on a grey winters morn, cheers for that !
With regards,
Jean
