| | a few lichens help! Whilst you're about Posch, any help with these from a couple of weeks ago in a remote wood in N.Yorks appreciated:
(or alan/jenny of course!)
All but last on deciduous trunks.
Ramalina fraxinea?
ramalina farinacea?
Punctelia subrudecta?
Punctelia spp?
Punctelia reddenda/Flavoparmelia caperata?
And this is Baeomyces rufus, I'm sure, but seems very pink - just fresh before darkening brown? On rock, unlike the others.
Thanks a lot, any steer gratefully received.
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: a few lichens help! Hi Pauline - I thought ah-ha, roseus at first myself, but thats supposed to be only on soil etc, not rock, which this was!
So it confused me.............not difficult.
You seen it on rock????
Cheers

Ken | I've not seen it at all - only rufus in North Wales many years ago I must admit I can't find any mention (despite checking several books) of it growing on rocks ..... ??? Confused also now!!!

Ramalina fraxinea? | I'd like to be sure you've eliminated Evernia prunastri. Any close-ups of the thallus? Quote:
ramalina farinacea? | Looks reasonable to me. Quote:
Punctelia subrudecta? | Pass. Quote:
Punctelia spp? | What about Melanelixia spp.? Quote:
Punctelia reddenda/Flavoparmelia caperata? | Not Flavoparmelia, which I usually find has a pretty distinctive jizz, often with transverse wrinkles, and the colour is different from most of the other parmeliod spp. (presence of usnic acid?) . The underside of the thallus seems pale, and lots of marginal soralia, so P. subredecta is a distinct possibility. I think I collected something very similar at Clumber, but haven't looked at it yet! Will have to dig it out. Think PMG is on the ball on this one.
In general close-ups and a few more notes would help with the Parmelia s.l. spp. particularly about underside of thallus (colour, marginal cilia, rhizines etc.).
Keep them coming: I'm getting a lot of much needed revision done!

| | | Re: a few lichens help! Hi Ken,
1. I'm with Posch in suggesting Evernia prunastri, lobes too narrow for R. fraxinia and top right of the photo the underside looks decidedly Evernia-ish
2. Yes
3. Weird - any chance of a less shiny lobe and centre close-up as I'm wondering if it might be a Parmelia instead?
4. Probably Melanelixia fuliginosa ssp. glabratula
5. I'd wonder Platismatia glauca but a photo showing clearer detail would help: Platismatia glauca
6. Baeomyces roseus is now known as Dibaeis baeomyces but can't find any mention of it on rock - B. rufus is much more common and does have pinker, more translucent apothecia when wet.
To be certain you need to get the bottles out: B. rufus: K+ yellow, KC+ yellow. Mature aps C+ red D. baeomyces: K+ yellow going orange, KC+ orange |

| | | Re: a few lichens help! Hi all, thanks for all that!
Dibaeis baeomyces seems to be on soil base only from my books and all websites - I cant find any on rock - your site pic has some in wet soil pockets on rock Jenny - and it also seems to be a more apricot pink. Mine was on wet sheer rock, no soil.
So I still think fresh B rufus, but cant go back to test it!
But as you say, cant be absolute without test............
I'll have a look at the others and try a better pic too - busy trying to sort out some Cladonia from today, hhmmm.
Thanks a lot
Ken

| | | Re: a few lichens help! I think these are pretty much sorted out, but to add my own IDs:
1. Evernia prunastri
2. Ramalina farinacea as suggested.
3. Parmelia sp. Cannot make out critical detail (not even in the added photo), but looks more like an arboreal variant of P. saxatilis than P. sulcata - but need to confirm it has isidia.
4. Melanelixia glabratula (recently and correctly separated off again from M. fuliginosa as a separate species, but too late for new Dobson)
5. Platismatia glauca
6. Baeomyces rufus - pink apothecia because it is water-soaked.
