| | HELP needed please Re: Lichen I.D for these 3 species Good evening everyone, I've got 3 photographs of Lichen that I'd like to put a name to. Although I've searched my books I'm not too confident on the I.D.
Is one Peltigera membranacea??? This was growing near to the banks of the River Wye at Symonds Yat.
The 'bad hair day' lichen was on the banks of the River Dove at Dovedale.
The small disc shaped lichen was on the banks of the River Aln.
Thank you for any help on this posting,
Jean.

| | | Re: HELP needed please Re: Lichen I.D for these 3 species Hi,
1. Peltigera praetextata. This is commonly confused with P. membranacea, but the margins produce clusters of isidia (minute peg-like projections that break away, the main form of reproduction in this species). Looking at the photo at full size I can see a few such clusters of isidia, especially at the bottom of the photograph. Like P. membranacea, P. praetextata is minutely downy on the upper surface, but this is not visible when the lichen is wet.
2. Evernia prunastri. A common lichen on twigs.
3. Cladonia chlorophaea. This is one of the pixie-cup lichens. In this case it is rather tricky, as the general appearance and fairly abruptly tapered cups make it very similar to C. fimbriata, but it is rather coarsely granular, has a minutely toothed cup margin, and the finer granules (soredia) are rather patchy - all of which suggest to me that this is C. chlorophaea being a bit sneaky.
Good photographs - which makes providing IDs a lot easier!

The photograph of Peltigera praetextata doesn't do it full justice as I'm new to photography, Lichen and Fungi...so much to learn, think I will need more than one lifetime at this rate!
Evernia prunastri....the whole tree was covered in this common but splendid lichen...as I said, bad hair day!
Cladonia chlorophaea...I took this photo in July and have been trying to put a name to it but with no luck. Far too tricky for a novice like me but I was very pleased to have found it. Lucky too as it was low tide and I could walk that stretch below the bank..I didn't find any more, just that one clump.
I have a few more I need to put a name to... so watch this space!
With regards,
Jean
