| | | Can anyone give a name to this lichen?
It's common I'm sure, I just don't know what to call it. Can anyone help?
Bless you

| | | Re: Can anyone give a name to this lichen? It's a lichen of the Cladonia clan, possibly C. polydactyla but wait for confirmation before staking your salary on it. |

| | | Re: Can anyone give a name to this lichen? Hiya,
I'd tend to Cladonia chlorophaea group. C.pyxidata is also confusingly similar.
Alan S or Jennie S etc are better than us guessers though!
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: Can anyone give a name to this lichen? Hmm, I was resisting getting involved, doing Cladonia is not straightforward, but especially from photos. My impression was Cladonia coniocraea, but this is only an impression.
Information about substrate (is it on dead wood, or amongst moss), habitat and location (roughly where in the BI) all help hugely in eliminating some possibilities with lichens. |

Ken | Definitely NOT in the same league as AlanS & JennyS!!!!
AND what I did know is getting rusty, although a lot comes back very quickly in the field when I'm with someone more knowledgeable. I also struggle for the sort of cues I get in the field with photos, plus I just dont see enough different Cladonia spp. |

| | | Re: Can anyone give a name to this lichen? It's all a bit over my head - so you are all experts to me It was found on dead wood at Giggle Alley in Eskdale, Cumbria,in an clearing. If this helps at all?

| | | Re: Can anyone give a name to this lichen? This is somewhat tricky (as if any Cladonia wasn't!), but I am reasonably sure it is Cladonia ochrochlora.
Closely similar at times to C. coniocraea, but the podetia (the sticking up bits) more regularly terminate in small cups, the cups are somewhat wider than those of C. coniocraea and the margins bear a ring of slightly stalked brown pycnidia (dots), the effect being like a crown. Surface of podetium patchily corticate (i.e. 'skin' patchy, with bare areas, as visible in your photograph).
Good line drawing in Dobson, ed. 5, page 141, or ed. 6, page 148.
Frequent species on rotting logs and stumps.
