| | | Caloplaca and Ramalina (ID Confirmation/Help) Found this week on rocks (in splash zone above high water level at Heysham Lancashire).
First - I'm thinking possibly Caloplaca crenularia: -
Second - I'm thinking Ramalina sp. - It doesn't seem to fit with what Id expect for R.farinacea or R.subfarinacea. - Might it be R.siliquosa?
Any confirmation / other suggestions much appreciated.
Regards,
Mike. |

Alain | No, you have misunderstood the ostiole character in Ramalina cuspidata. The raised rim of the ostiole is black in R. cuspidata - not the case here. What we have is stong lateral light leaving the interior of the ostioles in shadow. They are not black. You will see this in other photographs of R. siliquosa.
The main branches of R. siliquosa are strongly flattened, often somewhat falcate, and usually strongly nodulose - all features of Mike's material. R. cuspidata has main branches that are rounded to weakly flattened in cross section, clearly with black markings contrasting with the smooth, ivory-like appearance of the cortex. As I have said before, R. cuspidata is probably the true "Sea Ivory". Ramalina siliquosa (images of British lichens) Ramalina cuspidata (images of British lichens)
