| | | Unknown Lichen growing on Elder Hello again
On a foray at Roche Abbey 26th February 2011 we found this Lichen(s) on Elder. It was difficult finding an area of the tree not covered with it!
Any help as always much appreciated.
John and Les
PS not had time to do any spot tests yet. Todays fungi finds are first in the queue |

| | | Re: Unknown Lichen growing on Elder Hi John,
Looks like you had another wet foray!
Yes, the yellow lichen is Xanthoria parietina, the thin grey one is Physcia adscendens (recognised by the marginal cilia in combination with the hooded apices for the lobes).
Yes, both can be abundant on Elder, due to the nutrient rich bark - both are nitrophiles.
No chemistry needed, but Xanthoria goes instantly bright purple with potassium hydroxide solution (good way to test the solution).

Alan | Hello Alan
Yes, very wet and extremely muddy too!
I also did the KOH reaction, instant as you pointed out ... It rather surprised me just how instant the reaction was!
Many thanks again
