Now I'm using a more appropriate blade for sections they certainly appear 'coarsely crystalline'. Is there a 'common' species I could reference showing 'finely granular' ... just to compare with!

I ordered my copy of Dobson from Allana Ecology a few weeks back and they got in touch with Frank Dobson who had a few copies left, Frank also kindly signed mine for me 
Maybe get in touch with them if your still interested John?
If you ask nicely Frank may even sign yours too (don't know if anyone else is as sad as me! )
