Parmelia lichens for id..

..oops I posted this thread in non-flowering plants before realising there was a special place here for lichens ..but I think there are two species of Parmelia here..



..and I'm thinking the larger yellow-green species is Parmelia caperata (a gardening book tells me caperata means wrinkled and that seems to fit)..

..and then there is a smaller greyish species in there too, apparently with black hair-like structures near the edges, just visible right of centre in this crop..



..which would suggest Parmelia perlata?

Does that seem reasonable?

Hi Rob,
Right with your first ID, though the name is now Flavoparmelia caperata.
The second is not Parmotrema perlatum (that name changed too!) but is probably Parmelia sulcata

Thank you Jenny - and I have updated my 1977 Observer's Book of Lichens with the new names.

Having found some web photos of Parmelia sulcata I reckon you are right about that one too.

Quite a few names have changed since 1977!

The British Lichen Society - Synonyms of British Lichens might be of help if you're trying to source additional photos etc to confirm provisional IDs made with help of the Observers book (I loved those books!)
