I think this is Pixie Cup Lichen, sorry don't know the latin name, but would appreciate confirmation, and also some idea of how common this is, I have never seen it before but it looks great, found at the base of an oak on the South Downs this morning.

Looks like Cladonia polydactyla, maybe, these grow on moorland and at the bases of trees but i am not certain though. |

It might be Cladonia chlorophaea - its not C. polydactyla as that has red apothecia (fruiting bodies) |

Cladonia chlorophaea is a difficult aggregate of probably separate species and so very variable, but these photographs belong somewhere in that aggregate. C. polydactyla does not form neat 'pixie cups'. For a splendid photograph of C. polydactyla, see FungiJohn's recent 'Some Lichen from Scotland' thread. The pixie cups in that same photo are C. diversa and C. fimbriata.
